29.1 Understanding The Purpose of Music Videos

In this report I will be talking about the purpose of music videos. I will explore why people watch music videos and how they have developed within streaming.

The purpose of a music video is to sell the song and to let you remember it. Also, it gives the listener a better understanding of the song if you are able to see the narrative through a video. The main purpose of music video is to entertain the audiences by showing if the skills they have. So, if a song writer can also sing and dance they will most likely include this into the video. It is also to encourage people to buy the CD’s and DVD’s after seeing the music video and enjoying the song. Creating a memorable visual for the song increases its chances to sell, shops that do this are HMV, Amazon, and other retailers.
Queens Bohemian Rhapsody is generally regarded as the first “music video”. At the time, Queen were about to embark on a long UK tour, but wanted the song to be played on television shows, in particular Top of The Pops. As the Beatles and Procol Harum among others had done in the 1960’s with short films of their singles, Queen chose to film a performance of the song, which due to the complexity of the track was a wise idea. The popularity of music videos really started to increase in the 80s, MTV launched in 1981. The first music video played on it was Video killed the radio star’ by The Buggles. Having a music video meant you had a way to ensure your music was heard all over the world. The majority of videos produced were British acts, which is why in the 80s, there was an increasing number of British acts in the American Charts. Which is a perfect example of the importance and impact of music videos.Top of the Pops is a music chart TV show made by the BBC, it’s the longest-running pop music show in Britain. The format was simple and effective and remains surprisingly popular, many other shows have mimicked it’s format.  It was first brought to the screens of the nation on New Year’s Day 1964 and was presented by Jimmy Saville.

The show was all filmed live, shockingly all the acts were actually miming their songs! The first edition features amazing, popular acts like the Beatles, Dusty Springfield and The Rolling Stones.  The 1970s were when the show’s viewing figures were at an all time high, with 15 million people tuning in. `
The show’s growing reliance on pre-recorded material that began in the late 80s lead to decreasing viewing numbers. The programme ran on TV until 2006 and then moved to the airwaves as a radio show, hosted by Tony Blackburn. The plummeting single sales, Youtube and Music Channels killed Top of the Pops because the public became familiar with ‘in demand’ and free music.

To conclude, music videos now days are really important because it is a next level into an Artists music career, another way to get their music across to the audience. In the 1970’s music videos weren’t as important than they are now in the 21stcentury, this is why I understand the purpose of music videos. A music video is a message to the audience, entertain and the main purpose of a music video is to promote brands. But it’s mainly to promote the track. Music videos provide the ideal opportunity for experimenting with visual moving imagery allowing learners to use their creative imagination the maximum and to apply technical skills which have been developed in other units.
